It is common for houses located in cold weather to have a fireplace in the living room, in their patio or even at the bedroom. In other countries, they use it when it’s not too cold but rather they use a heater when it is winter. Fireplace can save electricity bill though when the temperature is not that low.
Some modern houses already have modern fireplace too but they also use it as a fire pit. Indoor fireplace causes stains and also the risk of burning that might affect the house. The advantage though is keeping your place warm while you drink that coffee or cocktail or even just reading or relaxing. Outdoor fireplace would be convenient to many as it lessens the smoke inside and and the stains it causes on the walls. You have to stay outside though to make yourself warm. Also the advantage would be, making that fireplace a gazebo or you can grill that steak or barbeque while having chit chat with your friends.
