Do not eat mollusks like clams or oysters taken from red tide waters, as they contain toxins that cause a food poisoning called NSP (Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning). Finfish caught live can be eaten if filleted. Shrimp and crabs are safe to eat.
What is the difference between oysters and clams? What about mussels?
The shell of a clam is smooth and shiny while an oyster has a rough outer shell. Mussels and scallops can be infected with red tide too.
