The Croquet All England and the Lawn Tennis Club hosted their first tennis event in Wimbledon, a suburb of London, on July 9, 1877. The Gentlemen’s Singles tournament, the lone event at the first Wimbledon, attracted twenty-one amateurs. The prize was a 25-guinea trophy for the winner.
