Lawrence Johnston and his mother immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1900, and Lawrence became a British citizen and served in the British army during the Boer War. The Hidcote Manor Estate was purchased in 1907 by Johnston’s mother, Mrs Gertrude Winthrop (who had remarried).
